Alright! I’m sitting here in Denver, drinking my coffee and happily working on my Autumn Vines beret, and I got an idea. Play along with me?
So tomorrow is the first day of August. (I know. Shocking, isn’t it?) And that means that over in the Knitter’s Book of Wool group on Ravelry, we’re going to be switching to a new breed for the month. I’ll be doing the intro and kicking off the thread for the month, and our breed is going to be Wensleydale.
Now, I’ve found that Wensleydale is sort of like Dijon mustard…or olives…or Miracle Whip. People either really really really love it, or they never ever ever want to touch the stuff again in their lives. There’s not a lot of in-between feeling, it seems. (Me? Wensleydale = love. Dijon = love. Olives = love. Miracle Whip can go to hell.)
This seems especially true of spinners, and I think that’s partly to do with the fact that Wenny isn’t a super-easy spin. The thing that’s all too easy to do when spinning Wensleydale is to over-twist it into nasty rope that you just don’t want to touch. You have to keep your hands real far apart in drafting to accommodate the long staple length, and again, that’s something that spinners who are more comfortable with their Merinos and other finewools can have a hard time with.
But my goal today isn’t to talk about all the reasons we love (or hate) Wensleydale. Instead, I’m going to give you guys something to vote on. Because who doesn’t love a poll? (Assuming I can make one work here. I’ve never tried this before.)
For Wensleydale month, I can’t decide which project I want to cast on. Here are the things I’ve narrowed it down to:
Handspun Spunky Club Wenny in Not So Seaworthy for a sort-of cardigan-vest thing.
Handspun SCF Wenny in Herb Garden for a cowly neck thing.
Handspun Wenny I dyed in Harvest Table for a scarfy thing.
Handspun Wenny from Esther’s Place in Big Rock, Ill., in Surfer Girl for a shawly thing.
Handspun Wenny from Hello Yarn in Passage for a bag-thing.
Now, here you go. I’m posting a poll. You guys choose for me! I’ll post a poll over in the KBOW thread too, and in a week or so, I’ll tally up the results and cast on the winner. Fun, right?
Now, I’m off to walk this lovely city one more time and gaze longingly at the mountains a bit before I head back home.
Happy Day, Friends!
